While associated with an apocalypse, the inhabitants of northern Scandinavia experience this phenomenon every year. They know that winter nights do not last 24 hours in the sense that it is pitch black outside. Rather, there are degrees of somberness and colors throughout the daytime. In Äkäslompolo, the polar night lasts from mid December to the beginning of January.
